LCC Culinary Students Serve with Heart at Mary’s Kitchen

Lenoir Community College Culinary Arts students took their skills beyond the classroom this week by volunteering at Mary’s Kitchen in Kinston, helping to serve hot meals to community members in need.
Led by Culinary Arts Instructor Chef Metisia Wooten, the group is currently studying the connection between food insecurity and the farm-to-table movement. "I wanted them to see what it means to give back—especially to those who are experiencing homelessness or don’t have access to a hot meal every day," said Chef Wooten. “By serving at the soup kitchen, they’re seeing firsthand how these community efforts work, and how we might play a part—whether it’s sourcing food from local farms, helping prep meals, or even starting a small delivery program in the future.”
Student Nick Alston said the experience opened his eyes to the realities of hunger in the community. “I didn’t realize how big the homeless population is in Kinston, so it feels really important now that I’ve seen it firsthand,” he said. “My favorite part so far is just working as a team with everybody.”
Fellow student Kristina Durham agreed, adding, “Seeing people enjoy the food we’re making just makes me feel better—like I’m making an impact in someone’s life. We’re all working together for the same cause, and that makes it feel even more meaningful.”
Mary’s Kitchen staff member Melody Dailey emphasized the need for continued support. “We really need volunteers—especially early in the day, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.,” she said. “There are so many hungry people out there who just need a hot meal and to know that someone cares. I hope the students leave here knowing just how real the need is, and that the love they’re sharing through this work truly matters.”
