May 31st STEAM Day for Youth in Kinston
A local eastern North Carolina nonprofit organization will provide youth with an opportunity to participate in hands on activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Hope to Destiny for Youth and Dr. Jarrod A. Henderson are sponsoring a free STEAM/STEM Day on Saturday, May 31, 2025. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Holloway Recreation Center located at 101 Myrtle Avenue in Kinston.
Curtis Henderson founded the nonprofit organization in 2021. “At Hope to Destiny for Youth, we are the ones who provide a second chance for youth and young adults by way of prevention, intervention and suppression in gang involvement. We provide substance abuse education and juvenile delinquency prevention through mentoring and education to support and influence at risk youth by serving as caring adults and positive role models in their lives.”
Dr. Jarrod Henderson is a Kinston native and has dedicated his career to increasing the number of students who are in the pipeline to pursue STEM careers. He shared, “Introducing youth to STEM/STEAM activities fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It prepares them for future careers in technology-driven fields, encourages innovation, and promotes collaboration. Early exposure builds confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for learning, equipping them to tackle global challenges and shape a better future.”
The organization continues to provide resources in the community. Curtis Henderson stated, “We have touched a lot of youth in our community. This has included providing school supplies; holiday toys and Easter baskets, books, coats and sneakers to the youth and less fortunate adults in Kinston."
Education and community partners for this event include University of Houston; East Carolina University; Western Carolina; North Carolina State University and Kinston Housing Authority.
Lunch will be provided. For more information about Hope to Destiny for Youth, please call 252-560-9228 or email curtishend25@gmail.com.
