Four LCPS Students Earn Spots in Prestigious 2025 NC Governor’s School

Lenoir County Public Schools is proud to announce that four of its outstanding students have been selected to attend the North Carolina Governor’s School for the summer of 2025. This esteemed program, established in 1963, is the oldest of its kind in the nation and offers a unique, enriching experience for intellectually gifted high school students.

The Governor's School of North Carolina is a publicly funded residential summer program that enrolls approximately 800 students each year, split between two campuses: Governor's School West (GSW) at Greensboro College and Governor's School East (GSE) at Meredith College in Raleigh. The program serves students from public, private, and home schools, primarily rising seniors, though students from certain arts areas may be rising juniors.

Students are nominated by their schools and selected based on a comprehensive evaluation process that includes grades, test scores, application essays, and, for arts students, auditions. Each student is accepted into a primary course of study, known as Area I, which includes disciplines such as English, Spanish, mathematics, natural science, social science, art, choral music, dance, drama, and instrumental music. The curriculum emphasizes contemporary texts, compositions, artistic expressions, issues and ideas in these disciplines.

In addition to their Area I studies, all students participate in Area II and Area III courses. Area II classes explore various philosophical questions and ideas, while Area III classes encourage students to apply their learning to their personal experiences through the lens of ethics and values.

“We are incredibly proud of these students for earning a place in such a prestigious program,” said LCPS Superintendent Brent Williams. “Their selection is a testament to their dedication, creativity, and academic excellence, as well as the unwavering support from our educators.”

The LCPS students selected for the Governor’s School Class of 2025 are:

● Alicia Gonzalez-Gutierrez, Early College High School – Mathematics ● Jenna Van, Early College High School – Natural Science

Braden Barnett, South Lenoir High School – Natural Science

Campbell Price, South Lenoir High School – Social Science

These students will have the opportunity to engage with expert faculty, collaborate with peers from across the state, and develop skills that will serve them well beyond high school.
