Team Henry gathers for their annual Parkinson’s Walk in Lenoir County

With no start gun or finish line, the annual Parkinson’s Walk in Lenoir County isn’t about pace or prizes—it’s about presence, community, and support.

Held informally each year, the event brings together members of the local Parkinson’s support group, their families, and supporters from across the region. Participants walked when they felt ready, rested when needed, and found strength in each other’s company.

“We want the community to see what a good job we’re doing,” said Judy Heath, an organizer of the event. “There’s no set time or pressure. Just walk when you feel like it, how you feel like it.”

The group, which meets regularly at Air Grove Church, offers more than just medical insight—it offers friendship and real-life guidance for navigating the challenges of Parkinson’s disease. Meetings are filled with meals, conversation, light walks, and moments of shared strength.

Sisters Faith and April Abbott attended the walk in honor of their father, who was recently hospitalized at UNC Health Lenoir.

“He couldn’t be here in person, but we’re here for him,” said Faith. “We’ve learned more from being in this support group than anywhere else. It’s made a huge difference.”

April agreed, adding, “Even though our dad was in the hospital, we wanted to show up for him—and for all the people who show up for us.”

The annual walk may not have fanfare or flashing lights, but its heart is undeniable. As group members strolled, chatted, and embraced one another, the spirit of resilience echoed through every step.

For those interested in joining or learning more, the Parkinson’s support group welcomes new members at Air Grove Church, where no one walks alone.
