Light snow expected across eastern North Carolina Monday, forecasters warn of possible slick roads
The National Weather Service office in Morehead City reports high confidence that a light snow event will develop across portions of eastern North Carolina today, December 8. Rain moving in late this morning is expected to transition to a wintry mix and then to snow from northwest to southeast through the afternoon.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Martin, Pitt, and Washington counties, where forecasters say the greatest potential for snow accumulation exists. Expected totals have decreased since the previous briefing, with less than 1 inch of snow predicted across these counties, though isolated areas could see 1 to 2 inches.
Snow will struggle to accumulate early in the event, but temperatures are expected to fall to near freezing by late afternoon. Slippery roads are possible for the afternoon and evening commute within the advisory area, with snow lasting into the early overnight hours.
South and east of the advisory counties, rain may briefly mix with or change to snow before tapering off. These areas are expected to see little to no accumulation, while the Outer Banks and southern coastal areas should remain all rain.
Temperatures tonight are forecast to drop into the 20s away from the coast, raising the potential for black ice Tuesday morning due to wet ground and freezing conditions. The weather service noted that additional advisories may be issued later today if needed.
The briefing stated this will be the final update unless conditions change.
