Jones County Commissioners keep leadership, celebrate youth cooks and senior program grants

The Jones County Board of Commissioners held its organizational meeting this month, reappointing Chairman Frank Emory and Vice Chair Charlie Dunn to continue leading the board for the coming year. Commissioners handled routine business while also hearing several updates on youth programs and senior services.

Youth Cooking Club to Hold December Competition

Representatives from the 4-H Cooking Club shared details about their upcoming youth cooking competition, scheduled for December 12 at the Jones County Civic Center. Dozens of students from across the county participate each year, and commissioners were invited to help judge the event. Board members complimented the students for their confidence and creativity.

County Receives Two Grants Supporting Health and Seniors

The county announced two recent grant awards from the Harold Bates Foundation. The Health Department received $20,000 to expand services, and a second grant will extend the Senior Breakfast Program for at least another six months. The breakfast program originally launched with ARPA funds and has since relied on grants and local sponsorships. Staff reported the program costs roughly $1,000 per month, and efforts are underway to secure long-term community partners such as churches and businesses.

Commissioners Review Board Appointments

The board approved a series of routine reappointments to county boards including the ABC Board, Planning Board, Friends of Brock Mill, and the JCPC. As part of the annual process, commissioners also reviewed holiday schedules and lease renewals for county-owned properties.

A lengthy discussion arose around the county’s consolidated Human Services structure, which combines oversight of the Department of Social Services and the Health Department under the Board of Commissioners. Concerns were raised about long-term financial responsibility and state-level representation, but staff emphasized that programs remain funded through state and federal reimbursement and that existing advisory committees continue to operate.

Public Hearing Opens for Zoning Request

Toward the end of the meeting, commissioners entered a public hearing to consider an upcoming zoning matter, transitioning from the consent agenda to new business.
