The following restaurant inspections were conducted by the Lenoir County Health Department:

Brighthouse Mart And Grill 

5189 Hwy 55 W, Kinston 

Date: 10/02

Score: 87

Observations: 

Person in charge lacked knowledge and has multiple priority item violations. 

No certified food protection manager on shift at the time of inspection. 

No soap present at hand-washing sink. No paper towels available at hand-wash sink or in bathrooms. 

Several items in reach in cooler missing date marking. 

Observed several live flies in establishment as well as several dead bugs. 

No employees wearing hair restraints. 

Single-use articles cannot be reused, several articles being reused. 

Rust present in reach in cooler and reach in freezer units. 

Fryers currently not functioning. Only one stopper available for 3-comp sink, stopper is currently being used to hold sanitizer, a bucket is in the wash basin to hold water there until a stopper can be purchased. 

Provide a test kit that accurately measures sanitizer concentrations. No test strips available for sanitizer. 

Observed leak at prep sink and 3-comp sink. 

Mop sink lacking back flow preventer on hot water side. 

Mop water was being disposed of by dumping in the field, instead of utilizing the mop sink. 

Holes in wall behind hand-washing sink. 

Employee belongings being stored in reach-in-cooler, on lift top cooler and with bread. This is not an approved area for employee belongings. 

Hugo Grocery & Grill

2951 Hugo Road, Grifton

Observations: 

No certified food protection manager present. 

A few chemicals have not been labelled. 

A few squirt bottles of sauces are not labelled. 

Wet wiping cloths need to be stored in sanitizer solution between uses. 

Gasket for 1-door reach-in in back room has split with long piece of gasket dangling. 

Dumpster door open. 

Several crates and other miscellaneous items on premises near dumpster, behind building are piling up. 

East Coast Wings And Grill 

3021 N Herritage Street, Kinston 

Date: 9/24

Score: 85.5

Observations: 

Soap and paper towel dispenser for hand-wash sink in 3-compartment sink area has dead batteries. 

Several food contact surfaces have not been cleaned thoroughly/have dried-on food/have build-up from using them to store drained fryer grease. 

Container of cooked onions and peppers in walk-in are past expiration date. 

Insect control "ball" hanging over clean utensils on shelving in dish machine area. 

Several foods are not labeled. 

Few live roaches seen. 

Servers did not wear hair restraints.

Unopened boxes of disposable gloves shall be stored in a clean location and not below tools. Single service spoon need to be stored business end down. 

A couple of cutting boards have heavy scoring. 

The fryer, right-door gasket for lift-top refrigerator, bottom shelving, green baskets, wall-mounted wire shelving, gaskets for refrigerated drawers, and fryer scoop are damaged. 

Fryer baskets have build-up; the bread rack, speed rack, undersides of equipment, gasket for little freezer, table around base of computer screen, under-side of lift top lid and top, left back of top of lift-top lid, bottom shelves, inside of unit with refrigerated drawers (strong, foul smell here), tops of heat lamps, dish machine and its drainboards, racks, and prewash sink, chest freezer, fryer cabinets and backs, green baskets (sticky), shelving mounted on wall, gasket for refrigerated drawers, can opener base, etc. are all soiled with some being heavily soiled. 

Faucet for hot water on food preparation sink is broken. 

One toilet in ladies restroom is out of order. 

Only one stall in ladies room has a covered receptacle, and the main trashcan in this restroom is not covered. 

Hand-wash sinks shall be cleaned as frequently as needed to prevent build-up. 

Dumpster pad is heavily soiled with grease. 

Beats and bangs on walls, finish peeling off walls in hand-wash sink area. Some grout missing between floor tiles. 

Some plumbing pipes and drains are soiled. Ventilation grates are heavy with dust. 

Floors are soiled underneath/behind equipment. Walls are soiled and heavily soiled in dish machine area with mold/mildew. 

In women's restroom, there are cobwebs from stall to ceiling. Ceiling soiled and ceiling tiles in air vent area are dusty. Walls are soiled in men's restroom. 


Ruby Tuesday

3725 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Observations: 

Paper towel dispenser for hand wash sink in dish machine area is empty. Paper towel dispenser at end of cook line is empty.

Chemical dish machine is not pulling chemical. Sanitizer container is basically empty. Fill-in manager switched out almost-empty container with a full container but does not know how to prime machine.

Few foods in top of right lift refrigerator and on salad bar are not cold enough.

Few flying insects in dish machine area.

Server wears arm and hand jewelry that is not approved. 

Servers do not wear hair restraints. Food handlers shall wear effective hair restraints. Pony tails are not effective by themselves.

Ice scoop handle laying in the ice in the ice bin.

Gaskets, handles, fryer cabinets, equipment legs, side of the double stack freezer near the trash can, ledges, cracks, crevices, bottom shelf in dish room, and 3-compartment sink are soiled. 

Dumpster has holes due to rust. 

Floor has areas of absent grout. Few ceiling tiles are not placed correctly. 

Walls have dust/grease build-up in few areas. 

Much debris on asphalt ground in dumpster area. 

Some lightbulbs are not working. 


Subway - Walmart

4101 W Vernon Avenue, Kinston

Score: 92

Observations: 

No person in charge present. 

No certified food protection manager present. 

No vomit & diarrhea clean-up plan on-site.

Hand wash sink in back room has no soap and sink up front is low. 

Bread pans, ice machine, pan liners, meat/cheese slicer, tomato slicer, tea urn, lids w/permanent marker, and shredder are soiled. 

Dial, stem-type thermometer is not accurate.

Shakers of dry ingredients for pretzels are not labelled.

Bag of raw onions stored on the floor. Food shall be stored in a clean, dry location.

Food employee wears bracelets. 

Ice scoop stored in a manner that is not protected. Pan liners stored on top of splash guard between food prep sink and 3-compartment sink which may allow splash from food preparation to contaminate pan liners. 

Refrigerated front line is electric but establishment adds ice because unit is not functioning as designed to keep food cold. Equipment shall be in good repair. 

Strainer under 3-compartment sink is soiled with food debris, inside front line cabinets, ice machine, surface underneath cutting board in pretzel area, microwave handle (build-up), oven handle (build-up), proofing cabinet inside walk-in refrigerator has crumbs and build-up, grunge around sunk-in pan in pretzel area, pans on front line that hold squirt bottles for dressing (heavily soiled with chunks of food, grunge, and slime in the bottom of the pans), freezer, empty steam well pan has black crud, area between splash guard and prep sink catches crumbs and is dusty, rolling cart, fountain machine nozzles that are dusty and have a grey tint because they have been stored in a pan for so long without being cleaned, etc.

Leak in plumbing pipe underneath 3-compartment sink. There is a bucket catching the water that is leaking, but the leak needs to be repaired. When water is running at the hand wash sink beside the food preparation sink, either there is very little pressure or water sprays out with extreme pressure and sprays outside the sink. Water should run normally and stay inside the sink. Toilet in men's restroom is stopped up. Toilet in ladies room is out of order.

Hand wash sink beside food preparation sink is heavily soiled with black mold/mildew.

Floor in walk-in refrigerator has chunks of food and shows a lack of cleaning, floor behind 3-door freezer has debris, drain underneath 3-compartment sink is soiled.

Wet mops are stored with head resting on can wash floor. 

Lighting in walk-in refrigerator and under hood is short. Lighting intensity in walk-in refrigerator shall be 10 foot-candles at 30 inches above the floor, and lighting intensity under hood in prep area shall be 50 foot-candles or more on work surfaces.

Employee jackets/clothing and purses stored on shelving with restaurant items. 


Sandpiper Seafood 

7877 Hwy 70 West, La Grange

Score: 94.5

Observations: 

Oyster tags are not with shell stock. Each tag shall be kept with its individual bag or container until the container is empty. 

Consumer Advisory is not worded correctly.

Pans of slaw that were recently made are in thick layers and are, therefore, cooling slowly. 

Few wait staff and 2 cooks did not wear hair restraint. Each food handler shall wear an effective hair restraint.

Handle of ice scoop in ice machine is in contact with the ice causing employees to possibly touch ice when they reach for ice scoop.

Few pans have not been air-dried thoroughly.

Several utensils stored close to chemicals in sliding door storage cabinet.

Gasket on 2-door refrigerator on cook line is not making an adequate seal. Faucet on hand wash sink in oyster bar and on 3-compartment sink are loose. One steamer in oyster bar does not currently work. Screws for can opener base are loose. Hamburger press is missing handle.

Wooden sifter, fryer baskets, butter skimmer, lids, pans for storing fries and hushpuppies after cooking are damaged. 

Gauges for dish machine are not working properly.

Area underneath grill, shelving above lift-top refrigerator, top of fryer backs are soiled/have build-up.

Few areas of wall damage, tiles underneath 3-compartment sink are damaged. 

Hood vents are absent from hood over flat top.
