Lenoir County Emergency Services to launch “Red Lights and Real Talk” podcast

Lenoir County Emergency Services is getting ready to hit the airwaves with a new community podcast designed to educate residents about what happens behind the scenes when emergencies strike.

Emergency Services Director Norman Bryson told commissioners Monday the show, titled “Red Lights and Real Talk,” will debut later this month on Spotify and YouTube.

“We want the accessibility,” Bryson said. “It’s cost-effective, really, to put on this podcast, and the equipment that we bought only costs about $600. We really think that what we’ll get will be a larger bang for our buck for that small amount of money.”

Episodes will run 20 to 40 minutes and cover topics such as 911 operations, staff profiles and how residents can prepare for emergencies.

“We can have all the ambulances and millions of dollars of equipment in 911, but without the people in the room to talk and provide service to the citizens, we couldn’t do it at all,” Bryson said.

Commissioners praised the initiative. Board Chair Linda Rouse Sutton said she liked that the podcast would help residents get to know the faces behind county services.

“It makes it more personal for people,” Sutton said. “If they see somebody they know, they’ll say, ‘I know them,’ and learn what they do.”

Bryson said the show will also help dispel misinformation that sometimes spreads online.

“A lot of times what you find on social media is not always good information,” he said. “We want to make sure we are providing good information the public can actually use.”

The first pilot episode of “Red Lights and Real Talk” is expected to record and publish before the end of October.
