UNC Health Lenoir’s Sports Medicine Team Keeps Eastern NC Moving

Whether it’s a high school athlete, a weekend runner, or someone getting back on their feet after an injury, UNC Health Lenoir’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team has become a trusted destination for advanced, local care.

More than two years since the service line officially launched, sports medicine has become a fast-growing area within UNC Health Lenoir. The program blends orthopedic expertise, rehabilitation, and injury prevention to help patients of all ages stay active and recover safely without leaving Lenoir County

“Our goal is to build a sports medicine service that delivers high quality care with small-town accessibility,” said Dr. Ricardo Valle, orthopedic and sports surgeon with UNC Health Lenoir. “We’re proud that people from across Lenoir, Greene, and Jones counties have access to comprehensive orthopedic and sports injury care right here at home.”

A Team Approach

The sports medicine team includes orthopedic surgeons, physician assistants, and athletic trainers who specialize in both surgical and non-surgical care. Together, they treat everything from joint injuries and rotator cuff tears to ACL reconstructions and fracture repair. Walk-in hours for acute injuries and same-day appointments have made the service especially popular among local athletes and coaches.

The team includes:

  • Dr. Ricardo Valle Diaz, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Surgery

  • Alex Brann, PA-C, and Levi Almond, PA-C, Physician Assistants

  • Aysha Reyes and Russell Jackson, Certified Athletic Trainers

Aysha and Russell can often be found on the sidelines of local games and practices, offering real-time support to coaches, players, and parents. Their presence ensures that athletes receive prompt attention for injuries and expert guidance on prevention, recovery, and return-to-play protocols.

Supporting Local Athletes

UNC Health Lenoir’s sports medicine program has become a vital partner to schools and athletic programs across the region ensuring players return to play safely after injuries.

“Being able to work closely with our local schools has been incredibly rewarding,” said Alex Brann PA-C. “We’ve helped athletes avoid unnecessary travel, get timely diagnoses, and return to their teams with confidence.”

More Than Just Injuries

The program’s reach extends well beyond sports. Many patients seek care for chronic joint pain, overuse injuries, and age-related mobility issues. Education and prevention are key parts of the team’s approach, helping patients strengthen, stretch, and move smarter to reduce the risk of future injury.

“Sports medicine isn’t just about treating injuries,” Dr. Valle added, “it’s about helping people stay active, healthy, and doing what they love. That’s the spirit of this program, and it’s what keeps us moving forward.”
