Adjunct English Instructor
Lenoir Community College is a comprehensive institution that places primary emphasis on excellence in classroom instruction. The Adjunct English Instructor is responsible for providing quality and engaging instruction to LCC students through the use of seated and/or online courses, and through other creative modalities as needed to promote successful completion of degree requirements.
The duties of the Adjunct English Instructor include, but are not limited to:
Mastery of Subject Matter
ยท Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge in the teaching discipline
ยท Display ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of the field or discipline
ยท Connect the subject matter with related fields
ยท Stay current in the subject matter through professional development; involvement in professional organizations; and attending professional meetings, conferences, and/or workshops
ยท Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate
Teaching Performance
ยท Teach a course load appropriate to the teaching discipline
ยท Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning
ยท Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students
ยท Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs
ยท Employ available instructional technology, i.e. the Internet, interactive technology, etc., when appropriate
ยท Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate student assignments
ยท Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives
Evaluation of Student Learning
ยท Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives
ยท Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives
ยท Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning
ยท Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades each semester according to established deadlines
ยท Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances
Support of College Policies and Procedures
ยท Teach classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment as needed
ยท Ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for advisement and consultation
ยท Prepare syllabi for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies
ยท Maintain confidentiality of student information
ยท Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials, and resources
ยท Comply with responsibilities as cited in the Lenoir Community College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Handbook for Distance Education, Policy Manual, and Procedures Manual
Participation in College, Division, Department, and Program Activities
ยท Participate in meetings as required
ยท Respond in a timely manner to requests for information
ยท Support both part-time and full-time colleagues
ยท Contribute to program, department, and division curriculum development processes
ยท Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or as a team member
Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs
ยท Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans
ยท Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College and its constituents
ยท Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, mission, and plans of the College
Other Duties
ยท Plan, implement, and evaluate course-specific instruction
ยท Assist the Dean of Arts and Sciences and the Chair in updating course content or making suggestions for course content updates as needed
ยท Attend meetings scheduled by the Chair or Dean
ยท Ensure contact information and other items are updated in the course being taught each semester
ยท Utilize the current course shell created by the Chair each semester
ยท Input notes and/or alerts in AVISO for students when necessary
ยท Ensure withdrawals are submitted in a timely manner, following the College's attendance policy
ยท Ensure assignments are graded within 1 week of submittal
ยท Ensure response to student emails or phone calls within 48 hours (excluding weekends)
ยท Other tasks as assigned by the Dean of Arts and Sciences and/or Chair
Qualifications
ยท Master's degree in English from a regionally accredited institution or a master's degree and 18 graduate semester hours in English (courses designated as graduate-level English courses)
ยท Experience using instructional technologies and teaching online courses is preferred
ยท Experience in a high school or college setting is preferred

ยท Typical classroom on-campus environment (when required)
ยท Typical online environment
ยท Occasional travel to service area high schools and/or LCC off-campus sites (if applicable)
ยท Frequent sitting or standing
