Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)/Instructor

 

The Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)/Instructor oversees planning and strategies for continuing education and curriculum programs involving law enforcement training, certifications, and renewals.  The Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training oversees, manages, and supports the BLET Qualified Assistant, instructors, faculty, and curricula for all law enforcement programs in compliance with the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. The BLET Director reports directly to the Dean of Workforce Development.  

Qualifications

ยท         An associate degree from a regionally accredited institution in criminal justice or a related field is required; a bachelorโ€™s degree or masterโ€™s degree is preferred

ยท         Must meet the minimum standards for BLET directors as prescribed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission

ยท         Extensive (5+ years) experience in active law enforcement is required; a background in law enforcement training and officer development is preferred

ยท         Candidates must be eligible for BLET certification as prescribed by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission

ยท         Current certification as a provider and instructor in Basic Life Support CPR through the American Heart Association, or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire is required

ยท         Awareness of regional, national, and global trends in law enforcement

ยท         Knowledge of current student learning outcomes, assessment, and curriculum techniques and methods

ยท         Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

ยท         Ability to work as a team member

ยท         Knowledge of general office practices and procedures

ยท         Knowledge of office equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephone

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The duties of the Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)/Instructor include, but are not limited to: 

ยท         Coordinate the schedule and implementation of the Basic Law Enforcement Training Program by the prescribed policies and guidelines of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission

ยท         Coordinate, contract, and supervise all instruction offered under the BLET Program to ensure that all modules meet the standards for quality and safety established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission

ยท         Manage expenditures for equipment and instructional materials related to classroom, physical fitness, and situational activities required for BLET training

ยท         Maintain current and up-to-date records to comply with all criminal justice standards, including state certification testing for students

ยท         Participate in the development and planning of goals and objectives, policies and procedures, new courses, and all supportive activities of the College 

ยท         Develop, lead, coordinate, and supervise a team of coordinators and faculty to produce and deliver quality instruction for continuing education and curriculum law enforcement courses

ยท         Monitor courses and instructors and ensure that courses meet high-quality standards and policy

ยท         Mediate between students and faculty to facilitate the resolution of a disagreement

ยท         Serve as the initial arbiter of disciplinary issues within the BLET Program

ยท         Maintain up-to-date information on instructional materials and techniques

ยท         Attend conferences and workshops that promote personal and professional growth, as well as development of the College's law enforcement training programs

ยท         Conduct instructor and faculty evaluations and the handling of employee relations issues promptly 

ยท         Research and develop plans for new course offerings to be presented to the Dean of Workforce Development

ยท         Ensure continuous revenue growth needed to meet long- and short-term goals by identifying new opportunities and serving current clients

The Director of Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) may also serve as an instructor. When in this role, the Director is expected to maintain competency in the following areas:
 
 Mastery of Subject Matter 

ยท         Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of the teaching discipline 

ยท         Display ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of the field or discipline 

ยท         Connect the subject matter with related fields 

ยท         Stay current in the subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, and workshops 

ยท         Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate 

Teaching Performance 

ยท         Teach a course load appropriate to the teaching discipline 

ยท         Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning 

ยท         Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students 

ยท         Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs 

ยท         Employ available instructional technology, i.e., the Internet, interactive technology, etc., when appropriate 

ยท         Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate student assignments 

ยท         Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials by course objectives 

Evaluation of Student Learning 

ยท         Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives 

ยท         Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives 

ยท         Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning 

ยท         Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades each semester according to established deadlines 

ยท         Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances 

Support of College Policies and Procedures 

ยท         Teach classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment 

ยท         Teach credit or non-credit courses in the teaching discipline as needed 

ยท         Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for advisement and consultation 

ยท         Serve as faculty academic advisor for students 

ยท         Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections by program and divisional policies 

ยท         Maintain confidentiality of student information 

ยท         Substitute for other instructors in the teaching discipline in case of an absence 

ยท         Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials, and resources 

ยท         Comply with responsibilities as cited in the Lenoir Community College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Handbook for Distance Education, Policy Manual, and Procedures Manual 

Participation in College, Division, Department, and Program Activities 

ยท         Serve on college committees as assigned 

ยท         Participate in meetings and events as required 

ยท         Respond promptly to requests for information 

ยท         Support both part-time and full-time colleagues 

ยท         Contribute to program, department, and division curriculum development processes 

ยท         Participate in graduation ceremonies 

ยท         Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or as a team member 

Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs 

ยท         Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans 

ยท         Contribute to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels 

ยท         Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College and its constituents 

ยท         Perform professional responsibilities by pertinent goals, mission, and plans of the College 

ยท         Participate in the marketing, recruitment, and retention of students, faculty, and staff 

ยท         Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
