Justin Tilghman: Path to Purpose – Part 3 – Building Confidence

As we continue our six-month series, "Path to Purpose," I'm excited to walk you through building confidence in yourself and the steps you’re taking. Building confidence is important as you begin to implement the different steps on this journey. Moving toward your purpose and growth zone is going to require you to move out of your comfort zone and through your fear zone, so confidence is going to be critical in that process.

Understanding Self-Confidence

Self-confidence is the trust we have in our abilities, qualities, and judgment. It's a cornerstone of success because it empowers us to take risks, face challenges, and persevere in the face of adversity. Confidence isn't about believing you're perfect; it's about embracing your imperfections and believing in your capacity to grow. That’s a critical distinction; otherwise, we’ll drift into arrogance and conceit, which will sabotage our efforts.

The Roots of Confidence

Confidence is often rooted in our past experiences, but it's also shaped by how we perceive and talk to ourselves. Negative self-talk and self-doubt can erode confidence, while positive affirmations and self-compassion can build it up. Remember, confidence is not a fixed trait; it's a quality that can be developed and strengthened over time.

Building Confidence Through Action

One of the most effective ways to build confidence is through action. When you step out of your comfort zone, push through fear, and achieve small victories, your confidence naturally grows. It's about setting realistic goals, taking small steps, and celebrating your progress along the way. We often lose our confidence because we see our goal as this massive mountain in front of us. But, confidence is built when we take our eyes off of the big mountain and instead focus on the incremental steps along the path that will get us up that mountain.

Challenge of the Month

With all of that in mind, here's your challenge for this month:

  1. Positive Affirmations: Start each day with a positive affirmation. Choose a statement that resonates with you, like "I am capable and strong," and repeat it to yourself every morning.

  2. Set a Small Goal: Identify a small, achievable goal that's slightly outside your comfort zone. It could be anything from speaking up in a meeting to trying a new hobby. Focus on the process, not just the outcome.

  3. Reflect on Past Successes: Spend some time reflecting on your past successes, no matter how small. Write them down and remind yourself of the skills and strengths you demonstrated in those situations.

By engaging in these activities, you're not just building confidence; you're also reinforcing the belief in your own abilities. Remember, confidence is a journey, not a destination.

Join me next month as we delve into the world of resilience, learning how to bounce back from life's challenges with strength and grace.
