Greene County Schools to host STEM Expo
Snow Hill - Greene County Schools will host its 8th Annual STEM Education Expo to celebrate Pre-K-through-13 student learning in science, technology, engineering, and math. Community partners will share information with families aligned with health, safety, and careers. The Expo serves to showcase student products, engage with the community, strengthen partnerships, and raise STEM awareness.
Emily Lahr, STEM Education Coach shared that “ We hope to showcase studenst from all grade levels, citizen chats from high school students for visitors to watch (we will be posting the times and topics at the Expo), we will have vendors and organizations from around the state and locally, we will have indoor and outdoor activities and makerspace activities for all ages from each school.”
Dr. Jose Garcia who serves as the Grene County Director of Curriculum and STEM Education helped to establish the Greene County STEM program as a classroom teacher over a decade ago. Dr. Garcia shared a brief history of the program, “Greene County Schools (GCS) developed a comprehensive K-12 STEM Education program because of the need for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to support the various regional careers that require a new way of thinking. Strategies That Engage Minds has become the new mantra in classrooms. During this time of uncertainty Greene County Schools continues to offer students a variety of educational opportunities including participation in the STEM Education programming across K-12 instruction.”
He went on to add that “To recognize our state’s finest STEM Schools and Programs, NC has developed an application process to identify and recognize exemplary STEM Schools and STEM Programs. Greene Central, Greene County Middle, and Snow Hill Primary are recognized as a STEM School of Distinction, under the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s (NCDPI) STEM Recognition Program.”
STEM Education in Greene county, according to Lahr and Garcia, assists students to realize their potential by supporting their exploration of STEM related careers, develop multi-cultural relationships within teams to collaboratively solve problems by encouraging the development of 21st-Century skills, provide an inquiry curriculum with valuable life lessons, and by supporting their post-secondary or credentialing education to solve tomorrow's global issues.
The expo will feature events for the whole family include robot demonstrations, drone challenges, 3D printing, arts/crafts, CSI Escape Rooms, and more. The STEM Expo is the largest community event hosted by the STEM Education Program.
Join GC STEM on April 27 at the Greene County Middle School on Middle School Rd in Snow Hill rom 4pm-7pm.
