Midway Mart and Grill to open in Pink Hill

A new gas station with space for truck drivers has opened in Pink Hill. Midway Mart and Grill, located 15 miles south of Kinston and 14 miles north of Richlands at 8176 Hwy 258 South in Pink Hill, is a food service gas station with types of gas including regular gas, mid grade, and premium. They also have non-ethanol for boats and diesel for tractors.

“We have a Cashpoints out here too and an ice machine so you can get your bagged ice. We also have an air pump for your tires,” said owner Rodney Smith.

While the location hasn’t officially opened, people are able to go in and shop. The gas pumps are open 24 hours. At this time the date and time of the grand opening has not been set.

“There’s anything you want in the store, dipped ice cream, breakfast items, lunch, and were going to get the grill going soon so we will have hot dogs, fresh veggies, fresh hamburgers, and were going to have country kitchen specials every day like hamburger steak and fried chicken,” said Smith. “That’s what the people want.”

Smith had a grocery store in the past, Pleasant Hill Grocery, but it was too close to a creek. After a few years in business, they were flooded by Hurricane Florence. Being on a major road was important to Smith.

“There is a lot of traffic, so we hope to pull some in people and there are plenty of room for truckers,” said Smith. “I bought some property from my father-in-law. I told him I’d like to get enough land for the big trucks to come off the road with ease, so I bought about five acres. Some of the places in Kinston are so congested so we are hoping to draw attention from the truckers.”
