Greene County Middle School to receive Mr. Holland's Opus Foundations grant

Greene County Middle School announced this week that Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation has selected them to receive new band instruments. These instruments include three baritones, five flutes, three tenor saxophones, two bass clarinets, and five trombones.

“Really excited that we have won this again,” says Greene County Middle School Band Director Joanne McGowan.

Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, which started after the movie, gave the grant. The grant will provide Greene County Middle School with $32,000 worth of instruments that will go to sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders. The instruments will be considered school-owned and once the eighth-grader goes to their high school, then the high school will try to provide an instrument for them.

“What it does, is put instruments into the hands of less fortunate students and band programs so that everyone can be included in band,” said McGowan. “It’s one of the things I always say to kids when they are in fifth grade, money is the last reason you should not sign up for band that we will find a way.”
