Help wanted: Lenoir County Public Health Department - Animal Control Supervisor I

Salary Range: $34,541.72 - $52,559.32

Description of Work: This is supervisory work in the management of an animal control program of limited variety within a county health department. Employees are responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the program to insure compliance with county, State and Federal laws, regulations and procedures; supervising daily operations of the shelter and officers; hiring training and evaluating staff; developing and monitoring the budget; evaluating program and community needs and recommending changes in polices and procedures; and representing the animal control program in meetings with county officials or community agencies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of public health rabies laws. Thorough knowledge of animal collection and disposal methods. Considerable knowledge of animal control office management practices and supervisory techniques. Considerable knowledge of legal enforcement polices and procedures. Considerable knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to animal control. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public. Ability to plan, organize and direct work. Ability to read, interpret and explain rules, regulations and procedures. Ability to organize and manage the program and to hire, train, and supervise Animal Control Officers and other staff. Skill in the use of equipment, firearms, tranquilizer guns, and toxic chemicals used in capturing and destroying animals.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: Graduation from high school and four years of experience in law enforcement work including two years as an Animal Control Officer; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications: Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
