Meet Abbigail Barber: 4-H and Youth Development Agent

King’s Mountain native Abbigail Barber is the new 4-H and Youth Development Agent for Lenoir County. She graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science and a double major in Animal Science and Science technology studies. She has lived in the area for about three years now.

“I wanted to become a 4-H agent in hopes of making positive, lasting impacts on the lives of our youth in this community that they can carry with them throughout their lives,” said Barber.

Barber enjoys hands-on learning and feels lucky to have those learning experiences at the Extension. She has always loved working with youth and is excited to learn about areas like agriculture, livestock, healthy living, STEM, and civic engagement with them.

“I hope to get out in the community and let everyone know what we offer in the Lenoir County 4-H program,” said Barber. “I want to invite all youth in our community to join and be a part of our engaging, educational, and fun programs and activities.”

Her goal is to create a 4-H program based on what the youth of the community wants and needs. She hopes to gain youth members and volunteers who are dedicated and eager to learn.

“We are actively shaping the lives of our young people, offering them values of responsibility, leadership, and a sense of empowerment,” said Barber. “Youth are able to showcase their skills in district and state programs and competitions, providing them with great experience for the future.”

Barber believes that 4-H is a great way to get young people engaged in the community and that 4-H ties the youth to the agriculture community.

“I am so thankful to Extension for giving me this opportunity and I am so excited to grow this program in Lenoir County,” said Barber. “I look forward to meeting more people in the community and building meaningful relationships with many.”
