Community input needed to determine health of Lenoir County
In May, an important survey will be circulating in Lenoir County. UNC Lenoir Health Care, the Kinston Community Heath Center, the Lenoir County Health Department and the Lenoir County Alliance for a Healthy Community are asking residents of Lenoir County to complete the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA).
The assessment is done every three years and asks residents a series of questions about health, education, economic opportunities, safety, nutrition, exercise and other topics to obtain input on the health challenges, needs, and successes of the county.
The feedback from the community is used to create a Health Improvement Plan to better the opportunities for good health for everyone in Lenoir County.
“The CHNA is one of my favorite things that we do at the health department,” Lenoir County Health Department Director Pamela Brown said. “So often, our decisions are based on what is going on in our agency or what we gather from state and federal databases. The CHNA is the voice of Lenoir County residents saying what they need to be healthier.”
She continued, “The health department uses the results to develop programs to meet those needs. We put money and staff time into addressing the needs residents express, and the results of the survey become part of our strategic plan, so we take the CHNA seriously.”
The survey is available online and only takes a few minutes to complete. Hard copies of the survey are also available by calling 252-526-4212. The survey is available in English and Spanish.

“Because of how important this survey is to the community, we are asking everyone to take it,” Brown said. “I encourage faith leaders, businesses, officials, educators and health workers to make it available for their congregations, staff, constituents, students, and patients as well as others in their sphere of influence.”
