GCS to take off the Masks after Break

Updated with quotes. 12/15/2021

At their regularly scheduled meeting on Monday night, the Greene County School Board voted to move the district to Mask Optional following Christmas Break. Board Member, Joey Rackley made the motion to move away from mandatory masking. In his statement, Mr. Rackley stressed that this motion came with the understanding that if the metrics warrant it, the Board and Dr. Miller would return to the mandate. Mr. Joe Smith seconded the motion and the vote was unanimous (Brandon Johnson, Board Member was not present).

In a statement released to GCS Staff on Tuesday,  Dr. Miller (Superintendent)  stated that “the Greene County Board of Education voted to make face coverings optional for students and staff beginning January 3, 2022.”

He also emphasized that the  Board, in consultation with the Greene County Department of Public Health, will continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 metrics in the county.  If there is a significant increase in the number of infections in the schools, the Board will not hesitate to revisit its decision.”

The shift to Mask Optional does not apply to school buses or other forms of school transportation per the CDC mandate.
