Farmer's market update: In memoriam of "Wild" Bill Tilghman

Publisher’s Note: As published each week, below are excerpts from the Lenoir County Farmer’s Market newsletter.

In memoriam

We dedicate this weeks' market to our dear friend and long-time vendor, Bill Tilghman, affectionately known as "Wild Bill Tilghman". What fun we had when Bill was around the market. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a store of tales, tall and otherwise! Once he was asked, "Bill, do you have any rooster eggs?"

"Yeah", he replied, "but you can't afford them!" He couldn't stand the crosswalk on Herritage going from the riverwalk to the parking lot across the street. He said it would never work. We jokingly told him there was only one way to find out and that was for him to stand on the crosswalk. He just laughed and we laughed with him.

We could go on and on about funny things that happened, but we can't deny the pride he took in the vegetables he raised. They were just the best...especially those rattlesnake stringbeans. One had to get up early to get those...and boy was it worth it...and the little squash...just the best!

Our market will go on, but it will never be the same without Wild Bill among us. We will miss him enormously. There will be a memorial table at the market Saturday, as we pay our respects to our friend. Joyce, Bill's wife, Bill, Jr. and Bill's granddaughter, Anna will be with us between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for Bill's customers, friends and fellow vendors to greet and chat with the family. There will be a guest book that all may sign and leave a memory.

Hope to see you there.
