Obituary: William "Buddy" Briley Taylor

William B. “Buddy” Taylor, 88, of Kinston passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at UNC Lenoir Hospital. The visitation will be held from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., with the funeral starting at 12 noon, on Friday, June 2, 2023, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home with Pastor Allen Ham and Pastor Michael Wright officiating. Burial will follow in the John Green Smith Family Cemetery on John Green Smith Road Kinston.

The tears I cry and hold back are both of sadness and joy. Sadness because you were a giant in my life. You allowed a political neophyte access to your platform and wisdom, and you encouraged me. I am also very happy for you. From the moment of Emma’s passing, you knew where she was and you’d meet her there one day. Honestly, we all should be a little jealous of the love you had for each other. Now you’re there with her, my friend.

GEC ‘s Award Day: A Time to Celebrate

The exams and EOC’s were finished, and it was time to celebrate the many accomplishments of Greene Early College students. It would be a day to be remembered as family and friends and the entire GEC student body gathered at New Direction Church, May 19 for the annual awards day to applaud and cheer for each other.

KPD: Check point leads to drug arrest

A-Squad was conducting a checkpoint on Airport Rd. During the checkpoint, officers encountered Robert Etheridge (49) of Fayetteville, NC. During the encounter officers conducted a probable cause search. The search lead to discovery of marijuana, Psilocybin Mushrooms, THC vape pens, THC wax and US currency.

Youth media camp returns to eastern North Carolina

Kinston native and award-winning film director Resita Cox and her team return to Princeville this summer to host their second Freedom Hill Youth Media Camp- a 4-week documentary production program connecting NC students to Princeville's Black history through conducting interviews, learning oral history skills, exploring archives and learning the basics of documentary filmmaking culminating in a short participatory documentary about Princeville’s annual Homecoming Celebration. 

Arrest Made in Kinston Paramedic Shooting Case

The Kinston Police Department obtained warrants for Brennan Dijuon Hill (23) of Kinston in regard to Sunday’s shooting of a Lenoir County Paramedic. On Monday, May 29, 2023, officers with the KPD apprehended Hill. Hill was taken to the Magistrate where he was placed under a secured bond and released to the custody of the Lenoir County Jail.

CSS Neuse Museum ‘Friends’ hosting a naval history symposium

The Friends of the CSS Neuse Museum will be hosting a maritime history symposium titled “North Carolina Naval History in the Age of Sail and Steam” on June 23 and June 24 at the CSS Neuse Museum, located at 100 N. Queen St. The subjects covered will include Naval History from pre-American Revolution, during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 through naval advancements during the Civil War.
