Reece Gardner: Stand by friends when the going gets tough

All of us at times struggle with negative emotions, things we find difficult to understand. But we can better handle these negatives in this New Year of 2022 if we recognize that inspiration can come from them. For example, most of us are bothered by the way so many of our law enforcement people in various parts of our country are being treated today, from being humiliated and denied service at restaurants to being ambushed, wounded, and murdered.

Winter weather possible Friday into Saturday

The National Weather Service in Morehead City/Newport is monitoring the potential for accumulating snowfall across much of eastern North Carolina Friday night into Saturday.

Low pressure passing off the coast will likely bring rain to the area Friday, transitioning to snow as temps drop into the upper 20s to lower 30s Friday night and Saturday morning. There is still significant uncertainty with respect to the snowfall amounts and coverage, but areas further north currently look to have the more favorable conditions for snowfall accumulation.

Snowfall amounts and timing details will come into better focus over the next day or so.

Greene Early College High School wins FAFSA challenge

Greene Early College High School has been awarded a $500 grant as a winner of the 2021 North Carolina First in FAFSA Challenge. The school earned first place in the cooperative innovative high school category with 29.7% growth in FAFSA completions compared to 2020. The FAFSA Challenge is part of myFutureNC’s efforts to close the state’s educational attainment gap. The nonprofit is leading the state’s educational attainment goal of ensuring 2 million North Carolina adults hold a college degree or high-quality certification by 2030.

Parrott students take Honors in DAR contest

Three Parrott Academy middle school students have won awards in the 2021-22 Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest. Sixth grader Taylor Woodcock won First Place in District 8, seventh grader Chloe Lewis won Third Place in District 8, and former eighth grader Ezra Zapler won First Place in both District 8 and in the state of North Carolina.

Raleigh - L.C. Carlton, Jr. peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly home on Thursday, January 20, 2022. L.C. was born in Lenoir County to the late Lewis Clarence Carlton, Sr. and Aurelia Kornegay Carlton on August 16, 1934. He grew up in Kinston and El Paso, Texas. A service to celebrate L.C.’s life will be held in the chapel of Rouse Funeral Home in La Grange on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. The family will receive friends for a time of fellowship in the hour prior to the service. Committal will follow at Westview Cemetery in Kinston.
