Greene County Breaks ground on new High School

On Friday, July 19, 2024, Greene County Schools broke ground on the construction of the new Greene Central High School. Greene County along with Greene County Schools supported by Rep. Chris Humphrey and current US Rep but former State Senator Don Davis secured funding from the Department of Public Instruction for the 60 million dollar construction of a brand new high school. The new school will replace the current school that was built in 1960. 

Bank employee arrested for Assault by Strangulation

On June 20, 2024, KPD officers responded to an assault report at Wells Fargo located at 1903 W Vernon Avenue. Upon arrival, they made contact with the victim, who stated that while she was waiting in line, a bank employee named Lucretia McMurtry (55, of Kinston) began yelling at her. The verbal altercation escalated when McMurtry grabbed the victim by the neck, shook her head uncontrollably, and began strangling her.

In 2009, board members of the CSS Neuse Foundation decided to do something special to raise funds to place a monument for Alton “Doc” Stapleford to recognize and honor the work and supervision he provided during the construction of the CSS Neuse II.
