On Thursday, November 17th, 2022, the Kinston Police Department responded to a narcotics induced overdose death at Nations Inn, 410 E. New Bern Road, Kinston, N.C. During the course of the investigation it was determined that Dusty Wayne Taylor, 34, of Kinston was the distributor of the narcotics.
On Friday, November 18, Greene County Middle School’s Award winning Jr Beta Club inducted 66 new members. This was the first fall in person induction since 2019, as the Pandemic prevented the school from holding in person events. Current Members and new members and their families attended the event held in the school’s gym.
The State Highway Patrol expects the coming weeks to bring more vehicle traffic to our roadways with an increase in holiday travelers. This expected increase in roadway users will put a premium on the need for awareness, enforcement and education by the Patrol as it hopes to curb dangerous driver behaviors to include speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving.
Kinston Fire Department, Lenoir County Emergency Services, Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, Southwood Fire Department, North Lenoir Fire and Rescue, Sandy Bottom Fire Department and Deep Run Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire at 460 Camellia Street in Kinston. The homeowner stated that their stove caught fire. There were no human injuries, but the family dog was hurt in the fire.
The American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina (ACEC) awarded Summit Design and Engineering Services, PLLC, and Greene County Government the 2023 Grand Award of Engineering Excellence for renovating the former National Guard Amory building into the Greene County Operations Center.
The CSS Neuse Museum has partnered with non-profit organization KultureCity to provide a sensory inclusive experience for all museum programs and events. This new initiative will make exploring the museum a little easier for visitors with sensory sensitivities, including people on the autism spectrum, as well as people with sensory processing disorders, PTSD and other needs.

Snow Hill Primary gives out a weekly award called "Terrific Kid" awards. Each teacher at SHP chooses a student who has been responsible, shows great character, or has reached a personal goal. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for Greene County Volunteers. Special Volunteer Types: Individual (one person), Group/Team (two or more individuals who volunteered together as a team), National Service (volunteers with AmeriCorps, VISTA, or Senior Corps), Director of Volunteers-(a paid staff person who exceeds expectations of volunteer management).
Applications for the Leap Into Sheep Project are now open! This program is designed for youth that have never shown lambs before and would like to get involved in showing livestock.

Raising Awareness for the Developmentally Disabled (RADD) is holding a silent auction on Monday, December 5, 2022 at 9:00 am, and ending on Friday, December 9, 2022. Local businesses have donated items to be auctioned in support of RADD.
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award. The awards program, created by the Office of the Governor in 1979, recognizes North Carolina’s most dedicated volunteers.

I am a huge pasta fan, I wish I weren’t, but if you feel like me, it might be time to try a different type of spaghetti: spaghetti squash. I am not going to tell you that it is just as yummy and comforting as true pasta, but it is a great healthy alternative!! Spaghetti squash is a yellow-orange vegetable harvested in early fall. When cooked, the inside of the squash can be shredded into long, thin strands similar to angel hair noodles, and can be used in comparable ways.

The challenge was to document a challenge, and South Lenoir High School senior Ricki Lane met it in a way that won her a statewide award and $2,000 her school plans to use to upgrade its student counseling annex.
