In previous years, the Needs-Based Public School Capital Fund Fund Grant structure prohibited Lenoir County Public Schools from using both lottery funds and grant funds to replace E.B. Frink Middle School. It required all districts who were awarded the grants to return all lottery funds for the period of the grant. In LCPS’s case, it was five years.

Abbigail Doyle competed in the NC VFW voice of democracy competition. She is a senior at North Lenoir High School and one of 17 state finalists. Her essay and speech was selected as a winner by the local vfw post. She was then selected as the district 2 winner for the state.
Wesley Vernon three-peated as winner of the LCPS Spelling Bee last week and credited his having been in the district-wide contest twice before – and having won both times – with making his third appearance a little easier.

On Monday, January 30, Mrs. Sarah Gray was awarded Greene County’s Outstanding Employee. She serves as the Literacy Coach for Greene County Middle School and Greene Central High School, as well as leads the English department at Greene Central.
K’la Green has had her heart set on going to North Carolina A&T University since she was an eighth grader. Now, her achievements at Lenoir County Early College High School could get her to A&T on a full scholarship.

The trip Derrian Wilson took with a friend this week to Chapel Hill was part fun getaway and part reconnaissance mission. Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina could figure mightily into Derrian’s future now that the Kinston High School senior is a finalist for the prestigious Morehead-Cain Scholarship to UNC.
North Lenoir High School senior Claire Hollingsworth has been named a finalist for the Centennial Scholarship at NC State University, a four-year merit scholarship worth a minimum of $60,000, plus another $7,500 in enrichment grants.

On Tuesday night, the Greene County Middle School (GCMS) Cheerleaders competed in the Pitt County Athletic Conference’s annual Cheerleading competition. They finished the night second in their conference.
Kinston resident, Aliza Matthews, has been named to the President's List at James Madison University for the fall 2022 semester. Students who earn president's list honors must carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a GPA of 3.900 or above. Matthews is majoring in Dance - BA.
Laura Fern Jones, a graduating senior at Arendell Parrott Academy, has been named one of more than 5,000 candidates in the 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2023.

As part of their social studies work, Kristina Jones’ fifth graders will learn about the 50 states by using their iPads to create tourism commercials. Working closer to home, Betsy Mercer’s students will use digital tools to monitor the weather in their own backyard. The entire fourth grade at La Grange Elementary will have their nose in new novels, to be read as a class and discussed.
To be named to the Dean’s list, students must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 semester hours, have achieved a grade point average from 3.25 through 3.99, are not enrolled in any class numbered below 100, and have no grade lower than a “C”.
