Saturday, October 15, is going to be a day packed with events. Last Monday, I shared information about the “Autumn’s in the Air” fall festival scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and run until 5 p.m. This event is a fundraiser for the CSS Neuse Gunboat Association.
Welcome to our new weekly news column for veterans. Our intent is to distribute information on veterans’ issues to everyone. Please help us spread this news to all 5000 veterans in Lenoir County. We will accept veterans information from anyone wanting to reach out to our veterans community.
The late great Otis Redding sang a song called "Sitting On The Dock of the Bay." I have often wondered what inspired him to write those lyrics, where he just sat from sun-up to sun-down, watching ships roll in. What caused him to feel so lonesome?
As we move deeper into the school year, we want to remind everyone about the opportunities available for learners of all ages at Neuse Regional Libraries. Many fun and educational weekly programs are available for little learners at each of our eight locations and throughout the community.

I'm sure you have heard the expression "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," and it is obviously good advice. I had the good fortune of being in the construction business a few years ago and viewing first-hand the superb talents of many dedicated craftsmen, such as carpenters.
October 15 will be a jam-packed. The day begins with “Breakfast on the Boat” at the CSS Neuse II in cooperation with the Ironclad Races Half-Marathon and 5K runs. The half marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. The 5k starts at 7:45 a.m. Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. until around 10:30 a.m.

On Friday, September 30, the Lenoir County Historical Association will hold a grand birthday celebration to serve a dual purpose. This year, 2022, marks the 250th anniversary of the construction of Harmony Hall – and it also marks the 51st anniversary of the founding of the Lenoir County Historical Association. The construction of Harmony Hall began in 1772, and the association held its organizational meeting in 1971.
Pears are generally ready and ripe to pick in our region in late summer and early fall. Pears are not heavily produced in North Carolina but many of us remember a pear tree or two in our Grandparents yards. We certainly produce enough that you can find them at your Local Farmers Market.
