In the past few years, the Internet has moved beyond being simply a resource for leisure activities or research to becoming an essential part of daily life. In 2020, individuals are required to use the internet to look for and apply for jobs, seek educational opportunities, access government services, and do many other essential things that were previously done offline.
Elections are not the main focus of my Column today, but I do want to highlight the fact that One Stop Early Voting begins on Thursday, Feb. 13, and will run until Saturday, Feb. 29, with Primary Election Day falling on Tuesday, March 3.
TD#1 has been harping on the pet duck thing for about a year now. We have a beautiful dog named Lucille that is quite loving to people and joyously homicidal to any series of critters she discovers invading our yard. I'm not sure what function the duck would serve that Lucille isn't already serving, as she loves the water and after eating too quickly is known to quack like a Gatling gun for several minutes.
Soul food, great entertainment, and a sense of freedom defined spaces owned by people of color that formed the backbone of the “Chitlin Circuit.” Kinston was a featured part of the circuit in the years before the end of Jim Crow.
Only a nice soup will warm you up in the winter, and in Eastern NC we love it when it is a seafood-based recipe.
Last Saturday at a local grocery store, I experienced something firsthand that I have always heard about, but never truly believed.
This past weekend - Thursday through Sunday - will fall into that category of "Precious Memories" for me. My loving, precious daughter Jessica spent those days here with me and I felt blessed beyond description.
At night when everyone has stopped scurrying around, Lucille and I love to go for a walk. She periodically gets distracted and proceeds to dig up several acres of farmland in pursuit of some varmint. She chases birds and rabbits day and night - and occasionally catches them. I can't tell you how many crime scenes our sweet dog has generated.
On Nov. 20, 1951, Adkin High School students in Kinston staged a walk-out to protest the inferior educational setting they were forced to endure. Their action came three years prior to Brown v. Board of Education and more than a decade before Dr. King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.

I knew a little about Adkin High School. For instance, Adkin High was the first high school for African-American students east of Raleigh. The school opened in the fall of 1928 and it operated until 1970.
…
The students planned the walk-out by themselves. They did not want any of their teachers or administrators to be implicated in their actions – nor did they want their teachers to try to stop them. When their concerns were ignored at the school board meeting the evening of Nov. 19, 1951 the walk-out was set for the next day.
The Super Bowl is all about football and commercials, but if your team isn’t in play, it’s really all about the food!!
Read Reece’s thoughts on Allen McIntosh’s “I am a tired American”, an update on early voting and a humorous story.
If you like your steak so undercooked you can ride it from the grill to the table, that's your business. Every six weeks there's some new bacteria that can eat through iron ore like cotton candy, so stopping short of marinating my food in Purell, I'll be taking every precaution.
When the news broke that Aircraft Solutions USA had committed to building a facility at the Global TransPark, I was excited and curious. Anytime a facility can bring upwards of 400 new jobs to our area, that prospect gives me hope for economic improvement.
Sometimes it’s hard to think about fresh seasonal produce this time of year, but January is actually packed with fresh veggies that are super packed with nutrients and protein, which will fuel your journey as you snuggle in for the winter!
Let's talk more about the charade that is called Impeachment, which seems to be finally coming to an end. President Trump is on schedule to deliver his State of the Union address to the Nation on February 4, and Senator Lindsey Graham is predicting that this "trial" should be over by then, with the President likely being acquitted in a bipartisan vote.
What do Cary Grant, Kevin Costner, and I have in common? More than you might think.
Aside from being cursed with rugged good looks, we were all born on Jan. 18.
Between the holiday rush, a Myrtle Beach trip, and sickness, Sandra and I had not been to our gym for three weeks. When we returned from Myrtle Beach on Jan. 4, our gym had changed ownership and names. The gym we had known as Build-A-Body had become Good Bodies.
