An unloaded handgun was recovered this morning while in the possession of a student at Woodington Middle School. As a result, the child and the student’s stepfather have received criminal charges from the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office.

LCPS statement on firearm found at Woodington Middle School
Today at Woodington Middle School, students reported to school administrators that another student might have a weapon in his book bag. School administrators immediately investigated, which determined an 11-year-old male student was in possession of an unloaded firearm in his book bag. The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office took possession of the weapon and will make decisions about possible charges and other necessary steps moving forward.

Woodington baseball field named for long-time coach
Perry Lychak came from Canada to Kinston to play baseball and stayed on to become a teacher and coach and become beloved. Woodington Middle School has acknowledged that mutual affection by dedicating its baseball field as a memorial to the pitcher who found home here.

LCSO announces new program "You've Been Caught Doing Good"
Lenoir County Sheriff Jackie Rogers and the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office have started a new program called “You’ve Been Caught Doing Good.” The sheriff presents awards to middle school students who have been recommended by their teachers and school staff for going above and beyond to help others and to foster a positive environment.
Seventh grader helps Woodington extend its spelling bee win streak
After winning the annual LCPS Spelling Bee for the past four years with champion spellers who eventually aged out, Woodington found a capable successor in Nikki Bellamy. The seventh grader outlasted the top spellers from the district’s elementary and middle schools on Thursday night to claim a fifth consecutive title for her school.

In 2019, Joshua Stroud of Woodington Middle School embarked on a mission inspired by a fellow young philanthropist he saw on television. Witnessing a peer organizing Thanksgiving food drives, Stroud was inspired to make a similar impact in his community.
Celebration of Life event honors Perry Lychak at Woodington Middle School
Woodington Middle School, in collaboration with the local community, is set to host a Celebration of Life event in memory of Perry Lychak, a renowned baseball player and local coach. The event will take place this Saturday at 11:00 AM in the school gym, with a reception to follow.
Warrants obtained in Woodington MS incident
The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office has obtained warrants for the arrest of Kegan Van Damke of Lewisville in regards to the break-in reported at Woodington Middle School. Damke has not yet been taken into custody. Woodington student repeats as LCPS Spelling Bee champ
Woodington Middle School seventh grader Wesley Vernon repeated as winner of the annual LCPS Spelling Bee winner Tuesday night, coming out on top in a contest with 13 other school spelling champs by, appropriately enough, correctly spelling the word “ouster.”
