As the Christmas season arrives in Pink Hill, one of the town’s most beloved traditions returns for its 65th year: the Miss Merry Christmas contest. Since 1960, this event has highlighted young women from the community who embody the spirit of service, kindness, and giving back.
Around 15 years ago, our family began a tradition of taking the week after Christmas as a time for a family vacation. For a dozen years or so, we traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC. This year, our destination was much closer – Atlantic Beach, NC.

Among the pagan-inspired customs of the Christmas season, there has come to be the ritualistic burning of the straw man. Specifically, I refer to the traditional seasonal column by a sly journalist or political analyst asserting that the exchange of Christmas gifts is a major lose-lose for the economy.
Last year, troopers responded to 2,970 collisions between the dates of Dec. 24 through Jan. 2. Among those collisions, 745 were injury related and 27 resulted in a fatality. This year, the SHP hopes to decrease the number of collisions during the same time frame by focusing on violations such as excessive speeding, reckless driving, following too close and impaired driving.
