North Carolina graduates this year posted an average score of 1,089, a decline of two points from 2019 graduates’ average score of 1,091. The two-point difference was less pronounced than a 9-point drop in the national average, which fell from 1,039 in 2019 to 1,030 in 2020.
Arendell Parrott Academy graduated one of its largest senior classes at commencement exercises on Friday evening in Ellis Simon Gymnasium.
The Down East Wood Ducks announced plans to host the inaugural 2020 ENC High School Senior Sendoff, Presented by Lenoir Community College on Saturday, June 27th at Grainger Stadium in Kinston. The event is a celebration of all recent 2020 graduates, but will be highlighted by a doubleheader of baseball games featuring recent 2020 graduates from various Eastern North Carolina High Schools. Gates will open at 11am with Game 1 scheduled to start at 1pm and Game 2 at 6pm.
Three Lenoir County moms began a quest to recognize this year’s seniors as school shut down for the remainder of the academic year. Lori Turner Eason, Carla Williams, and Christi Collins are all senior moms. The three ladies have launched an effort to ensure that the class of 2020 in Lenoir and Greene Counties feel some sense of normalcy through gifts and encouragement from complete strangers.

Most of us have heard the term “unintended consequence.” The term refers to the fallout, usually unanticipated, of an action or situation. Two of my older grandchildren are being impacted by unintended consequences of the coronavirus shutdown on high school and college students.
Thursday, April 9, Parrott Academy’s Student Activity Center was supposed to be filled with glitter and glamour and the sounds of the band Liquid Pleasure as juniors and seniors enjoyed the annual prom. It’s a rite of spring on the Kinston school’s campus, and throughout April and May for almost every high school in eastern North Carolina. But Covid-19 has the Class of 2020 finishing their last high school semester at home, without the traditional activities of a senior spring.
Maybe you are a high school senior. Maybe you are the parent of a senior. You might even be an educator, principal, friend or family member of a senior. In any case - this one is for you. Dear Seniors - we hear you. And we love you.
