Dozens gathered outside Gordon Street Christian Church this week to mark International Overdose Awareness Day, honoring loved ones lost and calling for compassion and action in the fight against substance use disorder.
August 31 marks International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), a global campaign to end overdose. This day serves as an opportunity to remember loved ones who have died from drug overdose as well as to acknowledge the grief of those left behind and to encourage support and recovery for everyone impacted by substance use and overdose.
Over the years of working in recovery courts and with folks in recovery, I have learned that everybody’s recovery is different. Some are able to be substance free quickly, some it may take months. Being able to sustain abstinence long term is even more challenging.
Treatment courts break the cycle of crime and addiction, reunite families, make our communities safer, and to do so at far less cost than jail or prison. That’s why the 9th Judicial District Accountability and Recovery Courts are celebrating the month of May as National Treatment Court Month!
North Carolina Drug Treatment Courts include Family Drug Treatment Court and Adult Drug Treatment Court. Family Drug Treatment Court works with people who are in danger of losing custody of their children due to abuse or neglect charges. Adult Drug Treatment Court works to help ensure offenders who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol receive treatment to become healthy, law-abiding community members.
