Gas leak on Roseanne Drive prompts immediate response and evacuation
A significant gas leak occurred earlier today on the block of 900 Roseanne Drive, leading to a swift response from local emergency services.

According to Damien Locklear, Fire Chief of Kinston Fire and Rescue, the incident took place around 9:30 a.m. A company doing work in the area struck a gas line, causing the leak. Units from Station 1 and North County Emergency services were also dispatched to assist with the situation.
The immediate response involved dispatching Piedmont Natural Gas to represent the gas company and quickly monitor levels in the area. Local emergency responders worked to identify the wind speed and direction to assess who else might be affected.
"One of the key things we do is to limit any type of ignition source," Locklear explained. "We wouldn't want to have any type of gas explosion."
The emergency team went door to door, notifying residents and ensuring their safety. A Southwest wind direction led to evacuations around Phillips and Lynn, blocking off Roseanne Drive to prevent any potential catastrophe.
One individual was transported to the hospital due to exposure to the gas leak. Precautionary measures were taken, and the situation was evaluated based on the size of the leak and proximity to residential and commercial areas.
Gas leaks can be particularly dangerous, especially when confined indoors, where they can potentially lead to explosions. The weather conditions and whether the leak is indoors or outdoors play crucial roles in determining the response.
In this case, the coordinated effort also involved working with Lenoir County Emergency Service to provide shelter options for the evacuated residents. The Pentecostal Holiness Church's Fellowship Hall and the nearby recreation facility were opened to offer support to the community.
"Some residents were given the option to shelter in place, depending on the safety factors," Locklear added.
Piedmont Natural Gas has secured the leak and it is now safe for residents to return home.
