Kinston, NC Greene Lamp Community Action, an AmeriCorps partner commemorates 9/11 25th anniversary
AmeriCorps is the federal agency connecting individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation’s most pressing challenges. Greene Lamp Community Action is a proud partner of AmeriCorps and receives funding from them to operate the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance Program. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance is a chance to help others in tribute to those killed and injured on September 11, 2001, first responders, and the countless others who serve to defend the nation’s freedom at home and around the globe. On 9/11 Day, Americans will step forward to serve in a remarkable spirit of unity, honor, and compassion.
As we approach the 25th Anniversary of 9/11, Greene Lamp Community Action will be hosting a “Unity in the Community” event to commemorate the historic occasion. “Unity in the Community” will take place on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the Historic Grainger Stadium located at 400 E. Grainger Ave. in Kinston from 4pm to 6pm. The event will give way to more than 40 resource vendors, activities for children and youth as well as a touch a truck opportunity with first responders and static vehicles. Most importantly this event will hopefully engage more than 500 volunteers as they will be serving hot meals and packaging hygiene kits that will benefit the North Carolina Veterans Home and the Friends of the Homeless, Homeless Shelter, as well as assisting with event logistics. This event is not only a tribute to those we lost but also a celebration of resilience and unity. Volunteers played a significant role in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks; therefore, it is our goal to demonstrate such right here in our own communities.

Greene Lamp was chartered on September 16, 1965, as a 501(c)3 non-profit Community Action Agency. Greene Lamp was established when two different anti-poverty programs merged; Greene County Community Action Committee and LAMP, Inc. (Lenoir Action Mobilization for Progress) thus the origination of Greene Lamp.
