Kinston selected for federally funded electric-vehicle charging station
The Kinston location is among 14 sites included in NCDOT’s second round of National Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure awards.
Kinston has been selected for a new electric-vehicle charging station as part of a $14.4 million statewide investment announced by the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The funding represents the second round of awards made through the federal National Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program, commonly known as NEVI. Eight businesses will use the funding to construct and operate charging stations at 14 locations across North Carolina.
The planned Kinston station will be located along U.S. 258, according to NCDOT project information. The department’s announcement did not provide the station’s exact address, the company selected to operate it or the amount awarded specifically for the Kinston project.
Other communities included in the latest round include Asheboro, Columbus, High Point, Raleigh, Wadesboro and Weaverville.
“The number of electric vehicles registered in North Carolina continues to increase,” NCDOT State Initiatives Manager Heather Hildebrandt said. “By expanding our electric vehicle charging network, we’re making it easier for everyone to travel confidently across the state, while supporting a cleaner, more modern transportation economy.”
North Carolina received $109 million through the federal program to partner with private businesses on the installation and operation of charging stations along interstates, highways and in communities. The funding can reimburse participating businesses for expenses associated with purchasing, installing and operating the charging equipment.
The 14 new sites will join five charging locations that received NEVI funding in 2024.
NCDOT expects the full charging network funded through the program to be completed within three years. A later phase will focus on installing chargers in additional communities and rural areas identified as having greater needs.
