BBQ plate sale, raffle to benefit North Lenoir teacher battling cancer

Community members are organizing a barbecue plate sale and television raffle to support North Lenoir High School teacher Michelle Taylor and her family as she battles cancer.

Taylor is facing cancer for the second time, according to organizer Mandi Cox. Taylor’s first diagnosis came while she was pregnant, and her treatment included delivering her child early and undergoing a double mastectomy. Cox said the cancer has since returned and spread to Taylor’s liver.

“She has the most positive attitude going toward it,” Cox said. “She loves her kids, and she’s just a great person. She just needs some help.”

Taylor and her husband have two young children. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help the family manage medical expenses and income lost when Taylor and her husband miss work for treatments.

The barbecue plate benefit will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 902 Church, 2009 Carey Road in Kinston. Plates cost $12 and include barbecue, two sides, bread and dessert.

Organizers are encouraging people to purchase tickets in advance so they can prepare enough food for the event.

A separate raffle will give participants a chance to win a 55-inch 4K UHD smart television. Raffle tickets cost $2 each, three for $5, seven for $10 or 15 for $20. Tickets will be sold through the day of the benefit.

Cox said Taylor is dedicated to her students and has attended nearly every North Lenoir graduation since she began teaching at the school.

“She loves her job,” Cox said. “She’s really into her students.”
