Jones County to Open Application Period for Urgent Repair Program on September 1
JONES COUNTY – Jones County will begin accepting applications for its Urgent Repair Program (URP27) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.
The Urgent Repair Program is funded through the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency and provides assistance to eligible Jones County homeowners who need urgent home repairs that address health and safety concerns or accessibility modifications that allow them to remain safely in their homes. Jones County was awarded $165,000 for the current funding cycle and anticipates assisting approximately 11 households, depending on project costs and funding availability.
Eligible repairs may include failing roofs, non-functioning heating systems, accessibility modifications, and other repairs that eliminate imminent threats to the health and safety of the home's occupants. The program is designed for income-qualified homeowners with special needs, including older adults, individuals with disabilities, veterans, single-parent households, and other qualifying residents.
New Selection Process for 2026–2027
Due to the overwhelming response received during previous application periods, Jones County has updated its selection process for the URP27 funding cycle.
Rather than reviewing applications on a first-qualified basis, all eligible applications received during the September application period will be evaluated using a standardized scoring system. Applications will be ranked based on factors including household vulnerability, income level, and the urgency of the needed repairs. This change is intended to provide a more transparent and equitable process while ensuring funding is directed to the households with the greatest need.
Priority consideration will be given to repairs that address the most critical health and safety concerns, including:
Failed heating systems (and medically necessary cooling)
Roofing failures causing active leaks or unsafe conditions
Accessibility modifications needed for residents to safely remain in their homes
Jennifer King, Jones County Deputy Director of Administration, said the revised process is designed to ensure the program serves those with the greatest need.
"Each year, we receive significantly more applications than we have funding available to serve. Moving to a structured ranking system allows us to evaluate every eligible application fairly and consistently while prioritizing households facing the greatest health and safety concerns. If you believe you may qualify, we encourage you to apply during the September application period."
Who Can Apply?
To qualify, applicants must:
Own and occupy a home located in Jones County.
Meet the program's income requirements.
Have a qualifying special need.
Have urgent repair needs that cannot be addressed through another housing assistance program.
How to Apply
Applications will be available beginning September 1, 2026. Because applications are only accepted during the official application period, they will not be available before September 1.
Applications and all required supporting documentation must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on September 30, 2026. Applicants selected to move forward in the program are expected to be notified by October 23, 2026.
