Jones County senior center site moving to Maysville Town Hall
JONES COUNTY — Jones County Senior Services is preparing to move its Pollocksville senior center site to a new senior room at Maysville Town Hall, a change county officials hope will make the program more accessible and welcoming for older residents.
The senior center site has been operating out of the Pollocksville Fire Department. Jennifer King said the move to Maysville is intended to better serve seniors on that side of the county while giving participants a brighter and more active space.
“We’re really, really excited about the new space and the opportunity for them to have more interaction with people coming and going there,” King said.
King said the county already has a senior site in Trenton and had another in Pollocksville. Because the two locations are relatively close together, officials began looking at whether it made more sense to shift the Pollocksville site farther down the county.
The move came together as Maysville was developing a new senior room at Town Hall.
“It just all kind of worked together,” King said.
The new Maysville space includes a front area with windows, something King said seniors had said was important to them. She said some participants did not enjoy the previous facility because it lacked natural light and felt closed in.
At Maysville Town Hall, King said, seniors will be in a more visible and active location, with people coming and going throughout the day.
“I think they’ll really enjoy the interaction,” King said.
The move was originally expected to take place July 1, but King said the timeline has been pushed back closer to the end of the month. A grand opening or grand reopening event is being planned, but a date has not yet been set.
King said organizers are considering ways to make the opening a community event, possibly including an ice cream social or similar gathering.
The change is part of a broader effort to strengthen senior services in Jones County. King said she expects participation to increase once the Maysville site opens.
“I really think our numbers are going to go up pretty drastic,” King said.
In addition to the Maysville move, the senior site in Trenton is also expected to receive new exercise equipment. King said Jones County received a $25,000 grant from the Harold H. Bate Foundation to purchase the equipment.
The county plans to release more information about the Maysville senior center site, including the opening date and address, once details are finalized.
