City leaders used the 45th annual BBQ Fest on the Neuse as the backdrop to recognize local student-athletes, presenting keys to the city to the Kinston High School football and basketball teams.
Mayor Kareem Moore, joined by Mayor Pro Tem Felicia Solomon and council member Les Lipford, led the presentation during the festival, calling the recognition both an honor and long overdue.
Moore said the teams earned the distinction after a standout year that brought statewide attention to Kinston through both football and basketball.
“These kids have made history,” Moore said. “They fought long and hard. Some of them played both sports throughout this year and they made it all the way to the championship.”
The Kinston High School football team finished as the North Carolina 3A state runner-up, while the basketball team captured the 3A state championship. City officials highlighted the athletes’ performance on the field and court, as well as their work in the classroom and their role representing the community.
During the presentation, Moore emphasized teamwork and perseverance as defining traits of the teams’ success.
“If you want to go fast, go by yourself. If you want to go far, take someone with you,” Moore said. “These kids and these coaches and this staff exemplify what teamwork means.”
Solomon said the recognition reflects the city’s broader vision of unity and progress, noting the importance of celebrating individuals who contribute to the community as a whole. She also acknowledged Lipford as the city’s newest council member during the event.
Coaches and school leaders echoed the significance of the moment, pointing to the role athletics plays in building discipline, teamwork and community pride among students.
Moore said presenting the keys to the city during BBQ Fest on the Neuse provided an opportunity to celebrate the teams in front of a large hometown crowd.
“We’re proud of them,” Moore said. “I’m honored to be able to present that award today.”
The presentation added a ceremonial highlight to the festival, which draws thousands to downtown Kinston each year and serves as one of the region’s largest annual events.
