Former NFL Player Chris Draft to Visit UNC Health Lenoir to Promote Cancer Exercise Program
Former NFL player and lung cancer awareness advocate, Chris Draft will visit UNC Health Lenoir on Tuesday, January 27, to spotlight the Get Real and Heel exercise oncology program at the Minges Wellness Center.
The event will take place from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Minges Wellness Center main entrance. Highlights include an “exercise blitz” workout session, an overview of the program, and an opportunity for participants to meet Draft in person.
“While exercise is known to be vital for the overall health of everyone, evolving research has shown the benefits of exercise on lowering the recurrence of cancer and improving the overall health and quality of life for cancer survivors, said Erin Williams, MSN, RN,OCN, Oncology Nurse Navigator at UNC Health Lenoir. “The Get Real and Heel exercise program offered at UNC Health Lenoir gives cancer survivors in our community the opportunity to improve their overall health, and we are incredibly grateful for Chris Draft and the extensive outreach he is doing to spread awareness on the importance of physical fitness to cancer survivors.”
Get Real and Heel offers a 12-week series of evidence-based exercise classes held three times per week. The program emphasizes strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular wellness, helping cancer survivors regain physical function and confidence in a supportive community environment. Sponsored by the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, the initiative represents UNC Health Lenoir’s ongoing commitment to comprehensive cancer care.
All cancer survivors are invited to participate in the special workout session with Draft during the event.
Draft became a national advocate for lung cancer awareness following the death of his wife, who was a non-smoker, from the disease in 2011. Since then, he has championed wellness and education initiatives across the country, including programs like Get Real and Heel, which highlight the vital role of exercise in cancer recovery.
