BCC excels in enrollment and workforce programs


Bladen Community College (BCC) is celebrating a year of remarkable growth, marked by double-digit increases across nearly every major enrollment category.

According to the latest institutional data, the College experienced a 21% increase in total full-time equivalent (FTE) students and a 20% rise in overall enrollment—a clear sign of its expanding impact on students and the community.

SouthPark Business Industrial Center breaks ground for new shell building, economic growth opportunities to come



Economic Development Commission Chairman Charley Farrior presented a speech to the audience located at 160 SouthPark Drive where Daniels and Daniels will soon start the next chapter of construction.

The new facility is a major accomplishment that will harbor opportunity for the local economy. The search for business owners continues and outreach has already begun with potential clients that may provide job opportunities and industrial expansion to the area in its next phase.

Jones County Heritage Pageant


Last year on September 28th, 2024, we proudly hosted the first Jones County Heritage Pageant since 2015. The pageant featured an On-Stage Presentation, followed by talent performances, an On-Stage Question, and the crowning ceremony. Participants showcased their talents through dance and song, entertaining over 50 guests in attendance. This year, we had four participants, and we’re confident that numbers will grow in the future.

Own Your Own restaurant competition runner-up opens new deli in Burgaw



Nearly two years after the Own Your Own restaurant competition, the runner-up has opened a new deli in Burgaw.

Junior’s Deli is located on Fremont Street in downtown Burgaw.

It serves freshly-made sandwiches, featuring homemade ingredients. The deli had a soft opening two weeks ago.

Mangual said community support has been strong, and they’ve sold, on average, more than 150 sandwiches each day they’ve been open.

Local resource rally reaches 400 families


The rally, hosted by Smithfield Foods, Feed the Children, and Clinton City Schools, provided support for 400 local families. Each received a 25-pound box of shelf-stable food, a 15-pound box of daily essentials, proteins such as ham, lunch meat, and bacon donated by Smithfield Foods, and backpacks filled with school supplies. For many families, it was a tangible relief as all schools have started the school year.

N.C. Mountain State Fair Returns Sept. 5–14 with New Acts and Classic Fun

1The 31st Annual N.C. Mountain State Fair kicks off Sept. 5–14 at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher, bringing a mix of new entertainment, competitions, rides, and local flavors.


Competitions in cooking, crafts, livestock, music, and more are now open for entry, with deadlines ranging from Aug. 8–22. Popular categories fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.


The fair features mountain music nightly, dozens of rides from Drew Expositions, and local goods at the Got to Be NC Pavilion, where nearly 40 food and beverage vendors will offer samples and sales.


Advance tickets are $9 for adults and $5 for kids (6–12) and seniors; children 5 and under are free. Special discount days include Student Day (Sept. 5 & 12), We CAN Fight Hunger Day (Sept. 10), and Salute to Service Day (Sept. 11). Details and tickets are available at www.wncagcenter.org.

On September 10, 1976, the facilities now known as the North Carolina Aquariums opened to the public for the first time. Their mission was to promote the awareness, understanding, appreciation and conservation of the diverse natural and cultural resources of North Carolina’s ocean, estuaries, rivers, streams and other aquatic environments.

Known as the North Carolina Marine Resources Centers until 1986, the aquariums were originally intended more as research facilities than as destinations for visitors.
