Flexibility That Fuels Success: Selena Knight Turns LCC’s Online Accounting Program into an IRS Career

By: Cailyn Kennedy

Selena Knight’s journey to becoming an Internal Revenue Agent with the IRS didn’t follow the traditional path—but that’s exactly what makes it so inspiring.

After deciding to change careers, Knight enrolled in Lenoir Community College’s Accounting and Finance program with one clear goal: to pursue a long-time interest in taxes and financial analysis. “I was far from the traditional college student,” she said. “I was working full time and raising a young child. The flexibility of the online program made it possible for me to take this leap.”

Knight had always enjoyed working with numbers, even as a high school student. But it was the comprehensive curriculum and supportive instructors at LCC that helped turn that passion into a profession. She credits her instructor, Kristy Grady, as a key influence. “Even though we didn’t meet in person until graduation, Mrs. Grady always kept in touch and guided me through the program. I never felt like I was on my own.”

While balancing work, parenthood, and school wasn’t easy, Knight stayed focused by reminding herself of her “why”—a goal to enter a career that had always intrigued her. That focus paid off. After completing her degree in 2022, she transitioned from a Tax Compliance Officer role to her current position as an Internal Revenue Agent, analyzing data and conducting in-depth tax reviews for the federal government. “It’s incredibly satisfying to see everything come together clearly and accurately,” she shared.

Knight’s LCC education filled in the accounting credits she needed to complement her existing bachelor’s degree in business, allowing her to qualify for the position she holds today. “The program reaffirmed my passion and gave me the tools to turn it into a career.”

Her advice to students considering accounting? “It’s not an easy program, but it opens doors—especially in government and private industry. And always be mindful of your grades. Your GPA can impact your salary.” She also encourages students to stay true to their own path. “If you find something you love—hold on tight to it!”

Outside of work, Knight enjoys reading, relaxing, and spending time with family and friends. One quote that motivates her daily? “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” – Maya Angelou

Her story is a reminder that it’s never too late to make a change—and with the right support and determination, you can turn your passion into a purpose.
