Candidate filing for 2025 municipal elections opens July 7
The filing period for North Carolina's 2025 municipal elections opens Monday, July 7, marking the official start of the campaign season for dozens of local offices across Lenoir and Greene counties. Candidates seeking election to partisan and nonpartisan municipal offices have until noon on Friday, July 18 to file with their respective county boards of elections.
Lenoir County
In Lenoir County, three seats are up for election in the City of Kinston, including the office of mayor and two city council positions. Incumbent Mayor Don Hardy is eligible for re-election, while Councilmen Chris J. Suggs and Robert A. Swinson IV currently hold the two at-large seats on the ballot.
“As Mayor, I’m proud of the progress we’ve achieved—and I’m running for re‑election to build upon it,” said Hardy.
Swinson is not planning on running to retain his seat. ”I don't plan on running in this election,” said Swinson
The Town of La Grange will hold elections for three seats on its Board of Commissioners, currently occupied by Roger Miles, Veronica “Nicky” Lee-Grant and Anthony Hall.
In the Town of Pink Hill, two Board of Commissioners seats are open. Penny Murphy and Brandon Marshburn currently serve in those roles.
Greene County
Greene County will see a mayoral transition in Snow Hill, as Mayor Dennis Liles has announced he will not seek another term. The town will also elect three commissioners. Geraldine (Pat) Shackleford, Faye E. Daniels, and Rosa S. Wilkes currently hold those seats.
“The only municipal election this November will be for the Town of Snow Hill,” said Greene County Board of Elections Director Melissa Dixon. “The Town of Hookerton and the Town of Walstonburg have agreed to move their election to even numbered years - as well as all the Sanitary Districts.”
All candidates must file at their county’s board of elections office during normal business hours. Election Day for municipal races across North Carolina is Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
