Statement Regarding Video Depicting Use of Force
The Kinston Police Department (KPD) is aware of a video circulating on social media that depicts an incident involving one of our officers and the use of force. We understand that this video has generated significant public interest and concern.
At this time, we can confirm that a KPD officer responded to a report of breaking and entering and larceny. The investigation resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Cameron Williams of Kinston. Williams was charged with Communicating Threats and Resisting a Public Officer. Officers requested medics for a possible medical issue, however Williams refused treatment once they arrived. He was booked into the Lenoir County Jail under a secured bond. The breaking and entering and larceny remains under investigation.
KPD takes all use of force incidents seriously. As with any incident of this nature, we have initiated a thorough review to ensure that all actions taken were in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and the law. This review includes a comprehensive examination of all available evidence, including officer reports, witness statements, and body-worn camera footage.
We are committed to transparency and accountability and will provide additional information as soon as it is appropriate to do so.
We ask for the community’s patience as this process is completed.
Any member of the public who witnessed this incident or has relevant information is encouraged to contact the Kinston Police Department at 252-939-3160.
