Bucklesberry, Back in the Day: Migration and Arrival
Migration and Arrival
Dr. Joe Sutton
Settlers did not all migrate into the backcountry of Bucklesberry at the same time, nor did they arrive in large mass. Rather, the various dates of 131 land records ranging from 1729 to 1759 suggest that the 92 named settlers trickled in individually, some possibly in small groups. Land likely changed hands through sale and trading over time. Thus, some of the land records probably represented duplication of the same tracts of land.
Just as determining the exact year that colonization began in Bucklesberry is virtually impossible, so is identifying when the settlers first arrived. The years that land records were issued are generally suggestive, however, of when landowners may have arrived in the geographic area of Bucklesberry. Dividing the thirty-year period of the land records into ten-year intervals, and assigning landowners to the corresponding intervals according to the first year they were named, allows for a possible order of arrival. The three arrival periods follow, with settlers listed alphabetically by last name:
First Ten-Year Arrival Period (1729-1739):
Atkins, Robert–1729 / Ayers, Ambrose–1736 / Herring, John Sr.–1738 / Herring, Simon–1738 / Rouse, John–1736 / Turner, Lazarus–1736 / Wiggins, John–1736 / Williams, John–1738
