 Industrial Systems Technology Instructor

 General Function

The Industrial Systems Technology Instructor is responsible for providing quality and industry-standard instruction in industrial systems topics through the use of seated, online, and lab courses. The Instructor will provide innovative and engaging instruction while ensuring that course topics and examples evolve with advancements in the field. This position will network with the regional industry to collaborate on a variety of projects through the Program Chair of Industrial Systems Technology. The Instructor will assist the division in collaborating across curriculum and continuing education divisions to deliver courses that meet the needs of local industry partners and students.

Qualifications

ยท         Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution and demonstrated competencies in the teaching discipline

ยท         At least 3 years of relevant industry experience

ยท         Must have experience in the fundamentals of industrial controls, machining, electricity, mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and welding

ยท         Must be able to read industrial schematics

ยท         Must have experience in troubleshooting industrial equipment typical to an industrial production environment 

ยท         Previous teaching experience at a community college or university, experience using instructional technologies, and teaching online courses are preferred

ยท         Licensure and/or certification requirements specific to the teaching discipline and external governing agencies shall be on file with Human Resources 

Working Conditions

  • Typical classroom or online teaching environment 

  • Frequent standing for 6 to 8 hours per day, withstanding frequent changes in temperature 

  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, crouching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling 

  • Infrequent lifting and carrying items up to 50 lbs. without assistance 

  • Frequent travel between buildings on campus and infrequent travel to other campuses 

  • Frequent listening to and talking with students and other faculty and staff members 

  • Infrequent sitting at a desk or workstation using a telephone, computer, keyboard, and mouse

  • Exposure to fire and chemical hazards

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The duties of the Industrial Systems Technology Instructor include, but are not limited to:

ยท         Ensure blended curriculum/continuing education course options for all courses within Industrial Systems Technology

ยท         Work to modernize equipment to industry standards, incorporating machining and mechanical engineering courses and tracks as needed to produce quality graduates

ยท         Direct students in laboratory classes; train and supervise activities of students in lab settings; and assist students with lab assignments and related activities  

ยท         Ensure that equipment, materials, and other resources, such as instructional aids are available for classes  

ยท         Take a lead role in maintaining lab equipment; and if needed, perform simple maintenance  

ยท         Make arrangements for equipment repairs when machines break down

 
Faculty members are expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the College:

  • Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge in the teaching discipline  

  • Display ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of the field or discipline  

  • Connect the subject matter with related fields  

  • Stay current in the subject matter through professional development; involvement in professional organizations; and attending professional meetings, conferences, and/or workshops  

  • Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate   

Teaching Performance   

ยท         Teach a course load appropriate to the teaching discipline   

ยท         Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize student learning  

ยท         Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students  

ยท         Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs  

ยท         Employ available instructional technology, i.e. the Internet, interactive technology, etc., when appropriate  

ยท         Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate student assignments  

ยท         Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives   

Evaluation of Student Learning   

ยท         Establish and follow meaningful learning objectives  

ยท         Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives

ยท         Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently and return student work promptly to promote maximum learning  

ยท         Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades each semester according to established deadlines  

ยท         Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances 

Support of College Policies and Procedures   

ยท         Teach classes as assigned in a multi-campus environment  

ยท         Teach credit or non-credit courses in the teaching discipline as needed  

ยท         Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and to students for advisement and consultation  

ยท         Serve as faculty academic advisor for students  

ยท         Prepare, distribute, and submit syllabi and approved course outlines for all assigned sections in accordance with program and divisional policies  

ยท         Maintain confidentiality of student information  

ยท         Substitute for other instructors in the teaching discipline in case of an absence  

ยท         Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials, and resources  

ยท         Comply with responsibilities as cited in the Lenoir Community College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Handbook for Distance Education, Policy Manual, and Procedures Manual   

Participation in College, Division, Department, and Program Activities    

ยท         Serve on college committees as assigned  

ยท         Participate in meetings and events as required  

ยท         Respond in a timely manner to requests for information   

ยท         Support both part-time and full-time colleagues  

ยท         Contribute to program, department, and division curriculum development processes  

ยท         Participate in graduation ceremonies  

ยท         Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff, and administrators as an individual or as a team member   

Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs   

ยท         Maintain familiarity with college goals, mission, and long-range plans  

ยท         Contribute to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels  

ยท         Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College and its constituents  

ยท         Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, mission, and plans of the College  

ยท         Participate in the marketing, recruitment, and retention of students, faculty, and staff  

ยท         Other duties and responsibilities as assigned   

Program chair/instructor, responsibilities also include:   

ยท         Coordinate and supervise curriculum development by designing, planning, organizing, and evaluating the assigned program of study   

ยท         Supervise and participate in the evaluation of faculty within the program area  

ยท         Coordinate the planning, implementation, and evaluation of courses  

ยท         Develop, implement, and evaluate departmental specific policies with the Dean  

ยท         Serve as a resource for student resolutions
