Rep. Humphrey urges NCDOT to expedite delayed La Grange road resurfacing project
The Honorable Daniel Johnson
North Carolina Department of Transportation 1 South Wilmington St
Raleigh, NC 27601
October 6, 2025
Dear Secretary Johnson:
I hope this message finds you well. I’m writing on behalf of the citizens of La Grange and Lenoir County regarding the continued delay of NCDOT’s planned resurfacing of DOT-maintained streets within the Town.
This project was closely coordinated with NCDOT while La Grange completed a major USDA-funded water and sewer upgrade. That work finished on schedule in June 2025, with the understanding that resurfacing would begin soon after. Since then, the start date has been pushed back several times and is now expected no earlier than spring 2026—despite the Town having met its commitments.
La Grange is the second-largest municipality in Lenoir County and is growing rapidly with a new middle school, hundreds of new homes, and increasing business investment. Yet the condition of major roads such as NC 903, Washington Street, North Charles Street, and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive continues to deteriorate.
I fully recognize the many priorities NCDOT must manage statewide and appreciate your continued investment in our region. However, given La Grange’s timely completion of its portion of the work and the community’s growth, I respectfully ask that NCDOT review this schedule and explore ways to begin resurfacing sooner—particularly along key corridors. Even limited progress would be a meaningful step for residents and local businesses.
I would also appreciate an update from your office regarding the current timeline and any factors contributing to the delay. I am confident that, through collaboration and communication, we can move this important project forward for the people of La Grange and Lenoir County.
Thank you for your time, leadership, and continued service to our state.
With appreciation,
Representative Chris Humphrey
NC House District 12
