The smART Kinston Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of Stephanie Brea as its new executive director.

Brea brings more than 25 years of experience in the arts, spanning project management, program development, event production, grant writing, administration, and social media. Her hallmark is building innovative partnerships and authentic community connections that turn creative ideas into sustainable impact.

Her path to Kinston began with a single Instagram post showcasing historic homes for sale. A spontaneous road trip soon followed. After meeting local artists and exploring area businesses, Brea found herself drawn to Kinston’s resilient energy and creative spirit.

A native of Pittsburgh, she has spent the past two years deeply involved in community life, volunteering with organizations and projects such as the Mother Earth Brewing Ironclad Half-Marathon and 5K, the Boar’s Head Festival at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, and the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library.

Having also participated as an artist in the smART Kinston program, Brea brings a unique perspective to her leadership.

“When I taught creative writing, I focused on three things: craft, courage, and community,” Brea said. “I see my role as executive director in a similar way. How can smART Kinston support artists of all genres? How can we deliver unique projects and programming that spur revitalization while ensuring the organizational sustainability to continue creating positive change and measurable impact? And how are we operating as an asset and strong community partner to the city?”

“Stephanie understands that art is not just about what hangs on the wall. It is about the people, the place, and the power to transform a community,” said Stephen Hill, founder of smART Kinston. “Her experience, passion, and deep respect for collaboration make her the right leader to guide smART Kinston into its next phase of growth.”

“While smART Kinston was not my sole reason for moving to town, it assisted with the relocation process,” Brea said. “I was able to build connections and become acclimated more quickly. Support from other artists in the program and fledgling friendships made for an easier transition. My goal is to provide a positive experience for others.”

With the Glen Raven property development agreement moving forward, the Paramount Theatre restoration, and the continued growth of Historic Mitchelltown, smART Kinston stands on the brink of a new era of expansion and opportunity.
