Director of Library Services
The Director of Library Services provides leadership and vision for the library. The Director is expected to represent the library within the community, develop programs, develop collections, provide budgeting information, and manage all library staff, facilities, and services. The Director of Library Services organizes, directs, and promotes the activities and programs of the library to the College and the community.
The duties of the Director of Library Services include, but are not limited to:
ยท Develop, plan, implement, and administer goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the library while interpreting and applying college policies and procedures on a daily basis to ensure an environment conducive to learning
ยท Develop long-range plans and goals for the enhancement of services, resources, and facilities and ensure that those plans align with departmental goals and the Collegeโs mission
ยท Oversee the selection, purchasing, processing, and discarding of all print and non-print library materials and collections according to the collection development policies and in accordance with accreditation needs for all programs of study
ยท Serve as lead for the libraryโs accreditation preparation and ensures the libraryโs SACSCOC accreditation requirements are met
ยท Submit IPEDS, ACRL, and other external required reports
ยท Collect statistical data concerning library operations and provide data to college administrators upon request
ยท Represent the library and the College at meetings, conferences, and in the community in order to expand partnerships and stay current on trends and the changing roles of libraries in the collegiate setting
ยท Complete periodic, on-going evaluation of the libraryโs resources, programming, and services to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, and academic programs of study to ensure appropriateness, adequacy, and effectiveness
ยท Supervise the timely and accurate processing, cataloging, and circulation of library resources
ยท Oversee the selection, purchasing, processing, and discarding of all print and non-print library materials and collections according to the collection development policies and in accordance with accreditation needs for all programs of study
ยท Engage faculty and staff in the selection of appropriate materials and resources
ยท Plan, prepare, and administer department budget and maintain all financial records
ยท Manage and coordinate library staff, complete performance evaluations, promote innovative and creative ideas among staff and foster a cohesive library workforce that provides professional assistance to all patrons
ยท Provide library instruction and orientations when needed
ยท Supervise training and development of staff, including performance evaluations
ยท Serve on numerous committees and councils at the college level
ยท Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
ยท Masterโs degree in library and/or information science (M.L.S. or M.L.I.S.) from a regionally accredited institution
ยท Five (5) or more years of experience working in an academic library setting such as a community college, a 2-year college, or other similar setting is preferred
ยท Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students
ยท A robust understanding of the principles of library science and technological developments in a modern library
ยท An understanding of organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs
ยท Must be creative, flexible, and possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills
ยท Knowledge of library database searching, the research process, and principles of active learning as applied to information literacy, and information literacy frameworks
ยท Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
ยท Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
Working Conditions
ยท Duties are performed indoors in an office environment
ยท Requires extended periods of standing, walking, and sitting
ยท Requires occasional periods of pulling/pushing items, lifting/carrying items, keyboarding, stooping, or kneeling
ยท May have to occasionally lift weights up to 50 pounds
