Local 7-year-old inspires community through music

At just seven years old, Contentnea-Savannah student Cameron Holder is making waves in the local music scene. The second grader, who recently showcased his original song, is inspiring peers and adults alike with his passion for music and his dedication to pursuing his dreams.

Holderโ€™s journey into music began early, influenced by a family deeply rooted in musical traditions. โ€œMy dad came up with the lyrics and the music, and my uncle Peasy made the beat,โ€ Holder said. โ€œI want everybody to know I made the song with my voice.โ€

His parents, Delmar and Jonika Holder, describe their son as a naturally talented and driven young musician. According to Delmar, music has been a constant in Cameronโ€™s life. โ€œHeโ€™s been around music ever since he was born,โ€ Delmar said. โ€œFrom being in a stroller, heโ€™s been exposed to it. Iโ€™ve made music, his mom sings, and his uncle is a drummer. Itโ€™s always been a part of him.โ€

Cameronโ€™s uncle, Rodney Bates, who serves as his business manager, also reflects on the boyโ€™s early interest in music. โ€œWhen he was about three years old, he would carry my drumsticks and say he was helping me,โ€ Bates said. โ€œHeโ€™s always loved the drums, and now heโ€™s channeling that passion into something bigger.โ€

Cameronโ€™s current musical journey includes a song that he plans to release on Valentineโ€™s Day. He is already performing at school events, church gatherings, and even opening for Batesโ€™ cover band, Jet Stream. Delmar notes that the communityโ€™s support has been instrumental. โ€œWeโ€™ve talked to his school, and theyโ€™re on board with him performing at pep rallies. Heโ€™s also going from event to event, and the encouragement from everyone around him makes a huge difference.โ€

Despite his early success, Cameron remains grounded and focused on his future aspirations. โ€œI want to play drums, guitars, and trumpets,โ€ he said. โ€œI have a drum set at my dadโ€™s house, and I practice a lot.โ€

The young musicianโ€™s parents and uncle emphasize the importance of fostering his happiness and growth. โ€œWe constantly ask him if he enjoys what heโ€™s doing, and he loves it,โ€ Bates said. โ€œMy main objective as his uncle is to ensure heโ€™s happy.โ€

Cameronโ€™s mother, Jonika, sees her sonโ€™s musical gift as something special for the community. โ€œI feel like Cameronโ€™s gift is a light, even to his friends at school,โ€ she said. โ€œItโ€™s inspiring to see someone use their talent for a positive reason.โ€

Holderโ€™s musical endeavors are already gaining traction in the local area, with plans for his performances to reach broader audiences. Delmar hopes the exposure will encourage other children to explore their talents. โ€œWith support from parents, family, and the community, kids can achieve amazing things,โ€ Delmar said. โ€œItโ€™s not something you see every day, and itโ€™s worth nurturing.โ€

When asked what message heโ€™d like to share with the community, Cameron expressed a hope to inspire others. โ€œI want kids to know they can do the same thing Iโ€™m doing,โ€ he said.

Holderโ€™s family remains steadfast in their support. โ€œWe love you, Cameron,โ€ Bates said during the interview. โ€œKeep doing what makes you happy.โ€

Cameron concluded with a heartfelt wish: โ€œWhen I grow up, I want to travel all around the world with my song, with my dad and Uncle Bates.โ€

The young musicianโ€™s determination and enthusiasm serve as a reminder that creativity and hard work can begin at any age, inspiring others to follow their passions.
