LCSO UPDATE: Pink Hill boy dead after accidental shooting

Jan. 14, 2024

At approximately 9:30 this morning, a 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with a handgun inside a residence in the 5500 block of Murphy Road in Pink Hill. After being transported to UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, the child was pronounced dead at approximately 11 a.m. today at the hospital.

This remains an active investigation by the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office. Out of respect for the child and family, their name is being withheld by officials until all family members can be contacted.

There may be criminal charges in this case, but those are pending until the investigation is complete.

“This is obviously a horrible and tragic situation and our heart goes out to the family and Pink Hill community,” Sheriff Jackie Rogers said. “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all involved.”

Again, this investigation is ongoing and there will be more updates as soon as possible.
